For Immediate Release

In response to the Institute of Medicine’s recommendation that the RN workforce with bachelor’s degrees increase from 50 percent to 80 percent by 2020, King’s College has established a RN to BS in Nursing program.

The College will offer its first two classes in the new program during the spring semester.  The courses are being offered to adult students at $350/credit, an almost 40 percent tuition discount, and no application fee, according to Dr. Cynthia Mailloux, professor and chairperson of nursing at King’s.

The courses will begin the week of January 15 and will each be taught one evening per week in a two-and-a-half hour block.

The coursework, which will focus on primary care, teaching and learning, leadership and management, and global health, is designed to allow current Registered Nurses with an associate or diploma degree an opportunity to further their education and increase their opportunities for career advancement.

The RN to BS in Nursing program requires a minimum of 122 credits and includes three graduate credits.  Credits are earned through transfer and advanced placement.  The RN student will receive advance nursing placement credits of 35 based on RN licensure and course work completed in a state-approved, nationally-accredited associate’s degree or diploma nursing program.  A minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.75 is required for admission to the program.

A maximum of 60 transfer credits will be accepted. Students will need to take an additional 25 BS level nursing credits and five credits of any electives at King’s to meet the minimum of 30 credits of residency and the 122 credits required for the BS in Nursing.

The addition of an RN to BS program in Nursing for part-time students is in addition to the previously announced 1-2-1 Dual Degrees in Nursing for full-time students in partnership with Luzerne County Community College.   Applications for that program are currently being accepted through the King’s College Admissions Department.  Classes will begin in August 2018.
